Riddle 6

Riddle me this, if you please:

I'm afraid of the light
And vanish in black night.
I'm next to you all day
But a jump tears us apart.
I know a game we both can play
where we need not much to start
where I form each shape you know.
I start tall, then I shrink, then I grow.
Now naming me should be at ease.
