Here I came down crashing
And tumbling after I tripped
When walking the high wire.
I fall into the arms of vanity:
"How could she do that to me?"
And tears of self pity wet my cheeks.
"That's so wrong, oh so wrong!",
The friend inside me cries.
But we don't cry for the same thing.
"Think of her instead of you.
Don't be selfish when she's in need.",
Love insists as stolidly as can be.
"I can't take another loss!",
The wounded heart aches
Putting on the armor of ice.
And in this confusion there's a voice,
Gently it whispers in my ear:
"Let me tell you a myth I know.
Let go of the beloved dead
Else your tears will hold them back
So they can't enter the afterlife.
You did all you can do,
Gave all there was to give
To find peace, let them go."
The icy armor melts into tears
Of all the shades of love,
Filling the holes like serum.
I get up on my knees,
Tears are still streaming down,
But with a smile on my face
I hear me whispering: "Goodbye"
