Lady Riddle had dreamt about dying, but that had been ordinary nightmares. They had been unpleasant, but harmless in the end. But what she experienced when Ol'Death took her hand was something different. She was not dreaming. She felt the pain and the cold. The knew for a fact that she was dying. There was no tunnel, no white light. There was only darkness, pain, and cold. Then, there was nothing.

Lady Riddle woke up and there was only silent darkness around her. But the final cold slowly faded as she felt her warm blood running through her veins. She was not dead. she was alive, and back in a body that felt like hers. A nagging headache welcomed her back. As she touched her forehead, she noticed her hand was shaking. Also, her eyes were watering and she felt overall terrible, without really knowing why. Maybe it was the stress from that strange tournament. Maybe it was the result of experiencing death. Knowing it was impossible to try to find sleep, the captain decided to get up. She carefully climbed out of the hammock and her still shaking hand searched for the matches to light the candles in her cabin. When the weak orange light reduced the darkness to dancing shadows, she felt slightly better. An evelope was lying on her desk.

To: Lady Riddle
Captain of the Black Fedora Pirates
Sangue-Padre

She recognized the writing and her face darkened. Still, she opened the enveloped and unfolded the letter stored inside of it.

Thank you most dearly for your participation in our tournament.
We regret your early elimination, which prevents you from receiving a second invitation. Still, we hope you enjoyed the unique experience.
As a reward for your progress,
you have been brought back to your bodies and home.

Sincerely,
The organizers

Lady Riddle opened one of the windows and burned the paper in the candle flame, letting the nightly breeze carry the ashes over the sea. Hopefully she would never hear of those sick people ever again. Still, the captain made a note for the archive. Maybe Crystal knew something about this tournament or of the people involved. As much as Lady Riddle wished to never see those organizers again, she also wanted to get back at them. She was able to ignore the abduction and the body switch.
The blue creatures had chosen a seamstress, a negotiator, a thief, a trickster, and only one sword fighter to fight against death mages, gunmen, and themselves. None of the fights had been fair. But even this would not have bothered the captain, if those fights hadn't resulted in deaths. Normally, an crooked game was challenging, but when murder was involved, it stopped being fun. Also, the blue creature had more or less expected them to kill a small, defenseless being and called it a free pass. Those mysterious organizers needed to learn a lesson and with some luck, one day the pirates would teach them.

A knock on the door disrupted her thoughts.
"Come in", Lady Riddle answered and Angel stepped in. The seraph showed a relieved expression and rushed over the the captain.
"You are back", she whispered and hugged her friend.
"I was worried. You, Sparky, Borris, Leelu and Erik were suddenly gone and nobody knew where you were", she whispered softly.
Lady Riddle hugged her back.
"I'm sorry. Some idiots decided to mess with us", she answered.
"Who were they?", Angel wondered, arching her eyebrows slightly.
"They called themselves the organizers. I have no idea who they are or where we've been", Lady Riddle said and suddenly got up.
"Are the others back and well?", she inquired.
"I don't know...", Angel answered.
"I need to check on them", Lady Riddle decided and was about to leave the cabin.
"Me Riddle", Angel called out and stopped the captain.
"You are upset. What happened to you?"
Lady Riddle sighed and let go of the handle. She returned to the seraph, knowing she first had to tell her the whole story. But none of them  was going to sleep soon anyway.

The next morning, Lady Riddle found out that Scratch had decided to have a little feast and took care of Sparky's, Leelu's, Erik's and Borris's nightmares. He had been very thorough, which resulted in the pirates being unable to recall the horrors of dying. The captain was relieved to hear this, but still rejected the offer of the same treatment for herself. As horrifying as the experience had been, she was convinced a true leader should never forget the ultimate consequence of her decisions. Still, she also wanted her crew to be able to put the strange tournament behind them.
"Which course to we take, captain?", someone asked. The captain grinned and pointed at a random direction on the horizon.
"Over there! I heard there are treasures waiting for us!"

Quite a twisted tournament, but an interesting one all the same!  I like it.  ^^ The plot twist was quite unexpected, I must say - wonderful job on this story.  :D  I'm glad everyone was able to make it back safely!
And perhaps one day we'll even go after the organisers, aye?  ;)
